We are back with Electronics & Improvisation. Again proving that the idea of Jazz is not confined to traditional instruments.
So here we go with 3 amazing performances on one night:
Mark de Clive-Lowe: Blue Note Remixed
Keyboardist-producer-DJ Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL) improvises a live set remixing samples from the legendary Blue Note Records catalog into a live on-the-fly mixtape performance. Half Japanese, half New Zealander, MdCL is based in LA and seemlessly bridges the gap between jazz musician and live electronic artist. A veteran of the UK’s early 2000’s broken beat scene and collaborator with house, drum’n’bass and jazz legends, MdCL is literally an uncategorizable talent. “If Duke Ellington had been a DJ, this might be what he would have done.” – LA Weekly
“Following on from the process of earlier EP ‘Starfish’ and ‘Live at the Funkhaus’, Aron and I set out to create a unique modern take on a Jazz that incorporated all the sonic potential of electronic music but without the usual rigidity that comes with it.
We wanted to achieve a balance between the acoustic and electronic elements in the productions and retain a human element to all these songs. I feel there is no direct and easy genre categorization for this music, it’s more of a style that comes from the idea that although sound can now be stretched and twisted, sampled and repeated it can still also be vulnerable and imperfect and most importantly, exist just in the moment.
These recordings just happen to capture a brief moment in the life of these songs (hopefully) without affecting the composition’s ability to live and change and breathe with time.”
The Brisbane based artist (musician, producer, singer, songwriter), who only began performing for audiences nationwide with his experimental blend of lo-fi soul at the end of 2013, is a raw and rare commodity.
Rakei has been making waves internationally with his inventive and refreshing blend of soulful tones, turning everything he touches (from Hip Hop to Dub, Deep House to Reggae) to gold. After starting piano at a young age his love for music intensified, allowing him to translate his ideas and influences into his own music. Through years of hard work and focus he’s been able to define and perfect a sound that is uniquely his own, whilst gaining recognition and respect from seasoned musicians and tastemakers across the globe.
In a world that divides art by genre, and constantly seeks to quantify cool, he is impossible to miss.
