XJAZZ! FESTIVAL 2023 x BAR.NEIRO

On Wednesday at 6 PM, Bar.Neiro is hosting another listening session for XJAZZ! Festival pass holders. This one features Kahil El’Zabar, the drummer and percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, veteran bandleader and composer who has been at the forefront of avant-garde and spiritual jazz for over four decades. He’ll be playing records and talking about the rise of the jazz scene in Chicago. Last month, together with his Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, first formed in 1977, he released Spirit Gatherer, a tribute to pioneering jazz trumpeter and composer Don Cherry, featuring LA vocalist Dwight Trible. The album both features and is a memorial to Cherry’s son David Ornette Cherry. Other releases include 2022’s A Time for Healing, 2019’s Spirit Groove, 1999’s Conversations, by Archie Shepp and Kahil El’Zabar’s Ritual Trio, and 1985’s The Ritual featuring Lester Bowie and Malachi Favors.
